Ayedaş builds a disaster telecommunication system for earthquakes

Thanks to the disaster telecommunication system activated by Ayedaş as a first in the sector, Ayedaş teams will be able to communicate with each other and continue their works in case the communication infrastructure gets damaged due to an earthquake in Istanbul. It will be possible to ensure communication and coordination between Ayedaş Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) centre, head office and radio operator buildings, as well as field teams.

Developed by Anadolu Yakası Elektrik Dağıtım AŞ (AYEDAŞ) which is one of the 3 companies of Enerjisa that distributes power to over 21 million users together with Başkent EDAŞ and Toroslar EDAŞ, the Disaster Telecommunication System was activated to be used at the Anatolian side which is the service region of the company, in the event of an earthquake in Istanbul.

Ayedaş teams have been communicating through a state-of-the-art push-to-talk system during their field operations and thanks to the new system, they will be able to ensure communication and coordination between grid management, head office, radio operator buildings and field teams self-sufficiently even in cases where telecommunication services are interrupted due to earthquakes or similar disasters.

3 towers and 2 mobile telecommunication stations were commissioned as part of the system and nearly 500 Ayedaş team vehicles were equipped with telecommunication systems that enable communication via these towers and stations.

Thus, Ayedaş activated an alternative and independent telecommunication system for 95 percent of the Anatolian Side region as a measure against the potential Istanbul earthquake and other large-scale disasters.

Alternative systems from Enerjisa against challenging conditions

Enerjisa Distribution companies developed and activated many mobile and alternative systems recently against disaster conditions by leading the way in the sector with significant works.

A mobile alternative was developed to operate in a bus for the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) centres which operate stationary in buildings and may become inoperable in case of disasters; hence, each and all of the Başkent EDAŞ, Toroslar EDAŞ and Ayedaş grids which provide services to over 21 million users have become remotely manageable.

On the other hand, mobile generators have been developed and commissioned recently in sizes that can feed sub-provinces with a population of 15,000-20,000 for power supply in the regions where the grids are completely damaged in disasters such as heavy snows, fires, earthquakes and floods.

Finally, thanks to the disaster telecommunication system, an alternative telecommunication system was has been brought to life for extreme conditions following the alternative power supply and mobile grid control.

"A strategic requirement both for our customers and our country"

Regarding the disaster telecommunication system, Süleyman Samsa, Enerjisa Distribution Companies General Manager, stated:

"The importance of high quality and sustainable energy increases day by day in the natural flow of life. Energy is a service of such importance as well as a requirement for many critical services such as water supply, telecommunication, health services and security. Therefore, it is a strategic requirement for both our customers and our country to have energy supply that will be self-sufficient in case one of these services is interrupted due to disasters such as earthquakes until the conditions become normal again. In other words, it is critical to be able to rapidly recovering normal conditions in extraordinary situations such as disasters. With this awareness, we activated this system to ensure communication and continuity of the works of our field teams in the event our communication is interrupted due to the potential Istanbul earthquake."
